The Jordan Meteorology Department was established, as an office for observation and weather prediction at Jerusalem Airport, in 1951 where the number of the weather observation stations, at that time, was limited and their missions were no more than issuing the weather forecast, weather predictions and, sometimes, weather information. Then the extension operations in building stations and using the most modern instruments continued until meteorology became in the from we see today. Today, meteorology enters a lot of life basic citizen life aspects. The role of meteorology is not limited to issuing weather forecast only but it also renders various services in the fields of aviation, agriculture, climate and construction.
In 1967, under regulation no.19, meteorology became an independent department connected to the Ministry of Transport. This department joined the International Meteorology membership in 1955, represented by all the commissions related to this organization.
Meteorology is a member of the subsidiary commission of meteorology related to the communication permanent commission of the Arab League since 1955.
In 1972, it was called the Arab Permanent Commission for Meteorology.

The Most Important Achievements for the Year 2010
Building Abilities:
1.(12) Engineer and weather forecasters shared in external courses on the field of satellites, numerical forecasts and weather changes in Germany, Socialist Republic of China, Turkey, Oman Sultanate, Iran, Libya, Egypt and Cyprus.
2.Rehabilitating the employees and promoting their abilities in the fields of communication, information technology. Seventy One (71) employees attended courses on computer programs, databases, oracle, and electronic government programs for a period ranging from one day to two weeks at the National Institute for training, the approved centers for this purpose or formal universities, accounting Divan, Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Waters and Irrigation.
3.Holding a practical training for three employees working for Kurdistan/ Iraq Meteorology Department.
4.Holding a practical training course at the training center and the department center for 13 employees working for Palestinian Authority, supported by the Japanese Agency for International Cooperation.
Communication Systems Development:
1.Satellite systems were updated to receive the clouds pictures/second generation by the French Company, Kurubur.
2.The German Jordanian numerical forecast model was updated and numerical forecast maps were issued.
3.The archive system of keeping weather data at the department center was operated.
4.The renewal of the agreement with the European Organization for satellites for acquiring the products of the organization free for three years
Updating and Maintaining Meteorology Stations:
1.Conducting the required periodic maintenance for air meteorology systems in all meteorology stations.
2.Replacing unserviceable instruments by new ones.
3.Connecting several stations to internet, providing them with computers , downloading meteorology and monthly reports programs.
4.Installing two automatic meteorology plants with climate elements for the purpose of comparison and scientific research in Ghour Al-Safa and Al-Rabba.
Updating and Supplying Meteorology Instruments:
1.The procurement of radio sound sets and balloons for measuring the stratosphere.
2.The procurement of classical meteorology instruments to meteorology plants and updating the old ones.
Information and Meteorology Results Introduction Field:
1.Providing local and foreign air companies with the flights plans for implementing the requirements of the International Organization for Civil Aviation with the required quality standards. The number of the air diagrams issued by the weather forecasts in the Jordanian airports reached about (14000) air diagrams.
2.Providing various multimedia with air bulletins issued by the National Center of air forecasts on a daily basis.
3.Participation in several workshops and studies concerning changes and their effects on the agricultural and aquatic aspects in the Kingdom.
4.Providing the Research and Studies Center with the climate data and information.
5.Providing the private sector with climate information where the revenues of this department amounted to (22000) dinars this year.
6.Distributing the climate annual report on all the ministries including the governmental institutions, governmental universities and private ones. Organizing an exhibition for meteorology instruments, receiving school students and introducing scientific explanation especially for the secondary stage
